Catchy, original Flobots round out lively hip-hop lineup

Anyone hungry for a well-rounded hip-hop show got one at the Middle East on Sunday with Busdrivers van eclecticism, People Under the Stairs back-in-the-day ethos and Flobots classical-tinged boom-bap.

A Los Angeles speed-rap virtuoso, Busdriver opened with his outrageously catchy The Troglodyte Wins. He drove the crowd (pun intended) into oddly amusing territorial dominion with synthesized charades and voice use on cuts like Kill Your Employer.

Some Busdriver lines, such as gay is the new black, might have soared over some heads, but the skills of this Project Blowed member clearly impressed even those unfamiliar with him.

Swinging arcsecond, Los Angeles duo People Under the Stairs proven that its more than a religious cult favorite of indie-rap aficionados. MCs Thes One and Double K kicked joints with surprising crossover potency, from the marijuana anthem Acid Raindrops to the undeniable San Francisco Knights.

At nearly an hour long, the twosomes set never dragged. With Thes Ones Boston-izing songs during impressive freestyles and Double Ks sporadic book scratching, they delivered a full-figured hip-hop experience.

Its not easy living up to a wireless hit as unique as Handlebars, but Denvers Flobots rocked with purpose. Emerging while violist Mackenzie Roberts sliced string section in the dark, MC Brer Rabbit told the crowd, There is a war loss on for your minds, and we are the insurgents.

In its first Boston show, the freshly noted live rap outfit came with more of a metal edge than comparable contemporaries Dujeous and Audible Mainframe. The sound fit lead MC Jonny 5s rugged anti-establishmentarianism.

While the highlights were predictable - about notably Handlebars and every viola solo - othermoments met match approval from the clapping masses. Flobots clearly matte up at habitation at the Middle East; despite the groups sudden emergence on the national stage, its still very much a club band.

As generically progressive as Jonny 5s anti-Bush rhetoric often sounded, civics lessons on tracks such as the Hurricane Katrina lament Stand Up proved refreshing nonetheless. Flobots is an original, purposeful rap music act that hasrisen to stardom. Nothing generic about that.

FLOBOTS, with PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS and BUSDRIVER at the Middle East, Cambridge, Sunday night.

Nihilistic Portland, OR, hardcore outfit Poison Idea was formed in 1980 by frontman Jerry A., guitar player Tom Roberts, bassist Chris Tense, and drummer Dean Johnson. The chemical group debuted triplet years later with the EP Beak Your King, cramming 13 songs into a 16-minute clip framing; the Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes EP followed in 1985, fine-tuning the band's blistery sound and fatalistic worldview. Thanks to their notoriously insatiable dieting of drugs, intoxicant, and junk food, the members of Poison Idea all ballooned past tense the 300-pound st. Mark by the time of the 1986 uncut Kings of Punk, with Roberts -- wHO now tipped the scales at an impressive 450 pounds -- rechristening himself Pig Champion in laurels of the occasion. Tense and Johnson were then discharged from the card, although the former returned in time for 1987's War All the Time, recorded with second guitar player Eric "Vegetable" Olsen and drummer Steve "Thee Slayer Hippy" Hanford; Tense was and so replaced by bassist Mondo for 1988's Filthkick EP. Both the Darby Crash Rides Again and Ian MacKaye EPs followed a year by and by, some other flow of roster garboil which made way for the addition of guitarist Kid Cocksman (presently replaced by Aldine Striknine) and bassist Myrtle Tickner. Poison Idea returned in 1990 with Palpate the Darkness, with a series of live releases (the Official Bootleg EP, the Live in Vienna EP, and the Dutch Courage LP) preceding 1992's Blank Blackout. A collaboration with Jeff Dahl appeared a year by and by, concurrent with the covers record album Pyjama Party; still, in the wake up of Pig Champion's subsequent departure Poison Idea disbanded, cathartic their June 6, 1993, farewell gig at Portland's La Luna as Pig's Last Stand.
